How to customize a Shopify store: change name, theme, navigation menu & favicon

You can change almost every visible part of a Shopify store from the Shopify admin. Your store name, theme, navigation menu, and favicon can all be changed without touching code.

Here’s where to find each setting.

How to change your Shopify store name

Your Shopify store name appears in places such as your store header, checkout, and customer emails.

Go to:

Shopify admin → Settings → General

Find Store details and edit the store name.

Enter your new name and save the changes.

Keep the name short and easy to remember. If you’re building a brand, check the matching domain name before settling on it.

Shopify store name vs domain name

These are separate settings.

For example:

Store name: Assam Tea House
Domain: assamteahouse.com

Changing your store name doesn’t automatically change your domain.

If you want to change the domain, go to Settings → Domains.

How to change your Shopify theme

Your theme controls how your store looks.

Go to:

Shopify admin → Online Store → Themes

You’ll see your current theme and the themes available in your Shopify account.

To use another theme, add it to your theme library first. You can then preview it and publish it when you’re ready.

Before publishing a new theme, check your homepage, product pages, collection pages, cart, and mobile layout. A theme can look great in the editor and feel completely different on an actual phone.

How to customize your Shopify theme

Click Customize next to your current theme.

Depending on the theme, you can change things such as:

  • Logo
  • Colors
  • Fonts
  • Homepage sections
  • Product page layout
  • Header
  • Footer
  • Buttons
  • Images

Make changes one section at a time. It’s much easier to spot what broke when you don’t change 15 things at once.

How to create a Shopify navigation menu

Your navigation menu helps visitors move around your store.

Go to:

Shopify admin → Content → Menus

Depending on your Shopify admin version, you may see Online Store → Navigation instead.

Choose the menu you want to edit, usually your Main menu.

Click Add menu item, enter the name, and select where it should lead.

For example:

Home
Shop
Men
Women
Sale
Contact

You can also create dropdown menus.

For example:

Shop
├── Men's clothing
├── Women's clothing
├── Accessories
└── New arrivals

Keep your main menu short. If visitors need to scan 12 links before finding the product they’re looking for, the menu needs some trimming.

How to add a favicon to Shopify

A favicon is the small icon that appears in a browser tab next to your website’s title.

For a brand, your favicon is usually a simplified version of your logo.

Go to:

Shopify admin → Online Store → Themes → Customize

Open the Theme settings and look for Favicon.

Upload your favicon image and save the changes.

A square PNG works well. Use a simple design because the icon will be displayed at a very small size.

After saving, open your store in a new browser tab and check the tab icon. Sometimes your browser keeps the old favicon in its cache, so give it a little time if the change doesn’t appear immediately.

Your Shopify store is ready for the next step

Once you’ve changed the store name, theme, navigation, and favicon, check the whole site on both desktop and mobile.

Then test the links yourself. Click the menu, open a product, add it to the cart, and go through checkout. Small broken links are much easier to fix before you start sending visitors to the store.
