How to create a Shopify store

Creating a Shopify store takes a few hours if you already know what you want to sell. The basic setup is simple: create your Shopify account, choose a store name, add products, set up payments, and connect your domain.

Table of Contents

Toggle
  • 1. Create your Shopify account
  • 2. Choose a store name
  • 3. Choose a Shopify theme
  • 4. Add your products
  • 5. Organize your products
  • 6. Set up payments
  • 7. Configure shipping
  • 8. Add your domain
  • 9. Create the important pages
  • 10. Set up your navigation
  • 11. Check your store on mobile
  • 12. Launch your Shopify store

1. Create your Shopify account

Go to Shopify and sign up for an account.

You’ll need an email address and some basic information about your business. Shopify will then create your store and take you to the admin dashboard.

Pick your store name carefully. It becomes part of your temporary Shopify URL, such as yourstore.myshopify.com.

2. Choose a store name

Your store name should be easy to remember and easy to type.

For example:

  • Urban Craft
  • NorthPeak Goods
  • Assam Tea House
  • PixelNest

Avoid long names, random numbers, and complicated spellings. Check whether the matching domain name is available before you commit.

3. Choose a Shopify theme

Open Online Store → Themes in your Shopify admin.

Shopify gives you free themes, and you can also buy premium themes from the Shopify Theme Store.

Start with a clean theme that fits your products. You can change colors, fonts, images, menus, and sections without editing code.

4. Add your products

Go to Products → Add product.

For each product, add:

  • Product title
  • Description
  • Product images
  • Price
  • Inventory
  • Product variants
  • Shipping information

Write descriptions for customers, not search engines.

For example, if you’re selling a cotton T-shirt, tell people what the fabric feels like, what sizes are available, how it fits, and how to wash it.

Good product photos matter too. Use clear images with consistent backgrounds and show the product from multiple angles.

5. Organize your products

Create collections so visitors can find products quickly.

You might have:

  • Men’s clothing
  • Women’s clothing
  • New arrivals
  • Best sellers
  • Sale

Go to Products → Collections to create them.

Then add the collections to your store’s navigation menu.

6. Set up payments

Go to Settings → Payments.

The payment options you see depend on your country and Shopify’s available payment providers there.

Set up the payment methods you want customers to use, then complete any required business verification.

Before launching, place a test order so you know the checkout process works correctly.

7. Configure shipping

Go to Settings → Shipping and delivery.

Set your shipping zones and rates.

You can charge a flat shipping fee, offer free shipping above a certain order value, or calculate shipping based on the customer’s location and order.

Make sure the shipping information matches what you actually charge customers.

8. Add your domain

Your Shopify store starts with a myshopify.com address. A custom domain looks much better for a real business.

For example:

yourbrand.com

You can buy a domain through Shopify or connect one you’ve already purchased from another domain registrar.

Go to Settings → Domains to manage it.

9. Create the important pages

A new store should have the basic pages customers expect.

Create pages for:

  • About us
  • Contact
  • Shipping policy
  • Return and refund policy
  • Privacy policy
  • Terms of service

Shopify provides templates for some store policies. Read them and change the details so they match your actual business.

10. Set up your navigation

Go to your navigation settings and create a simple menu.

A typical store might use:

Home | Shop | Collections | About | Contact

Don’t bury your products behind 5 levels of menus. Customers should reach a product in a few clicks.

11. Check your store on mobile

Open your store on your phone before launching.

Check the product images, menus, buttons, checkout, prices, shipping information, and contact forms.

This matters because a large share of online shopping traffic comes from mobile devices.

12. Launch your Shopify store

When everything is ready, remove the storefront password and make your store public.

Then test the complete customer journey yourself:

Homepage → Product → Cart → Checkout → Payment → Order confirmation

Fix anything that feels confusing.

Your first version doesn’t need to be perfect. Get the store working, watch how visitors use it, and improve the parts that cause problems.
