How to create a WordPress website: install WordPress, themes, business sites & landing pages
WordPress is one of the easiest ways to build a website without writing everything from scratch.
You can use it for a personal site, blog, online store, business website, or a simple landing page. The basic process is the same: get hosting, install WordPress, choose a theme, add your pages, and publish.
What you need before creating a WordPress website
You’ll need 2 things:
- A domain name
- WordPress hosting
Your domain is your website address, such as:
example.com
Your hosting stores your website’s files and database.
Choose your domain carefully. Keep it short, easy to spell, and related to your website or business.
How to install WordPress
Most WordPress hosting companies provide an automatic WordPress installer.
Log in to your hosting account and look for something like:
WordPress → Install WordPress
Choose your domain, enter your WordPress admin username and password, and start the installation.
Once it’s finished, your WordPress dashboard is usually available at:
https://yourdomain.com/wp-admin
Log in with the username and password you created during installation.
Set the basic WordPress settings
From the dashboard, go to:
Settings → General
Check your site title, tagline, WordPress address, site address, email address, and timezone.
Then go to:
Settings → Permalinks
Choose a URL structure that uses the post name. For most sites, this gives you clean URLs such as:
example.com/how-to-create-a-website/
How to install a WordPress theme
Your theme controls the design of your WordPress website.
Go to:
Appearance → Themes → Add New Theme
Browse the available themes or search for a specific one.
When you find a theme you like, install it and activate it.
You can then customize the site through the WordPress theme settings.
Depending on the theme, you can change:
- Logo
- Colors
- Fonts
- Header
- Footer
- Homepage sections
- Menus
- Page layouts
Keep the design simple. Your visitors came for the content or product, not to admire 14 different animations fighting for attention.
How to create a WordPress business website
A basic business website usually needs a few core pages.
Go to:
Pages → Add New
Create pages such as:
- Home
- About
- Services
- Contact
- Privacy Policy
- Terms and conditions
Your homepage should quickly tell visitors what your business does and how they can contact you or buy from you.
For example, a web design business might use:
Home
About
Web Design
Pricing
Contact
After creating the pages, add them to your website’s navigation menu.
Go to Appearance → Editor if your theme uses the Site Editor, or use the menu settings provided by your theme.
How to create a WordPress landing page
A landing page is a focused page designed around one goal.
That goal might be getting someone to:
- Buy a product
- Submit a form
- Book a call
- Download a file
Create a new page from:
Pages → Add New
Give the page a clear headline.
For example:
Get a professional website for your small business
Then add the information someone needs before taking the next step.
A simple landing page can look like this:
Headline
↓
Short explanation
↓
Main benefit
↓
Product or service details
↓
Customer proof
↓
Call-to-action button
Keep the page focused on one action. If you’re selling a service, your main button could say Book a consultation or Get a quote.
You can build the page using the WordPress block editor, or use a page builder if you need more control over the layout.
Make your WordPress website ready to publish
Before you send people to the site, open it on your phone and desktop.
Check every menu link, contact form, button, image, and page. Then submit a test form yourself.
Also make sure your site uses HTTPS, your domain works correctly, and visitors can easily find the information they came for.
Once those basics are working, publish the site and start adding content.
