Shopify SEO guide: Google Search Console, sitemap, product titles & descriptions
Getting your Shopify store into Google is only the first step. You also need to help Google understand your pages, products, and the searches you want to appear for.
Shopify handles some technical SEO for you. You still need to set up Google Search Console, submit your sitemap, and write good SEO titles and product descriptions.
How to add Google Search Console to Shopify
Google Search Console lets you see how Google finds and indexes your Shopify store.
Go to Google Search Console and add your Shopify domain as a property.
If you’re using a custom domain such as:
https://example.com
Add the domain property and follow Google’s verification instructions.
For domain verification, Google will usually ask you to add a DNS record through your domain provider.
Once Google verifies your domain, Search Console can start collecting information about your store.
You can check search queries, indexed pages, clicks, impressions, and indexing problems from the Search Console dashboard.
How to submit your Shopify sitemap to Google
Shopify automatically creates an XML sitemap for your store.
For most Shopify stores, the sitemap is located at:
https://yourstore.com/sitemap.xml
You don’t need to create the file yourself.
To submit it, open Google Search Console → Sitemaps.
Enter:
sitemap.xml
Then click Submit.
Google will use the sitemap to discover your store’s URLs. It can take some time before pages appear in search results, especially for a new store.
How to improve Shopify SEO
Start with the pages that can bring you customers.
Your product pages usually deserve the most attention because they target specific searches.
Check these areas:
- Product titles
- Product descriptions
- Collection pages
- Image file names and alt text
- Internal links
- Page URLs
- Meta titles and descriptions
- Mobile page speed
Use the words your customers actually search for.
For example, if you sell Assam tea, a product title such as Premium Assam Black Tea 500g gives Google and shoppers much more information than a product name like Morning Brew.
Write for the person who might buy the product. Search engines can understand normal, useful writing.
How to add SEO titles to Shopify products
Shopify lets you edit the search engine listing for each product.
Go to:
Shopify admin → Products → Select a product
Scroll down to Search engine listing and click Edit.
You’ll see fields for:
- Page title
- Meta description
- URL handle
Your page title should describe the product clearly and include the main search term when it fits naturally.
For example:
Product: Assam Black Tea 500g
SEO title:
Assam Black Tea 500g | Fresh Assam Tea Online
Keep the title readable. Stuffing the same keyword into the title several times makes it look like spam.
How to optimize Shopify product descriptions
Your product description should answer the questions a customer has before buying.
Include details such as:
- What the product is
- Who it’s for
- Size or quantity
- Materials or ingredients
- Main specifications
- How to use or care for it
- Shipping or delivery information when relevant
Use your main keyword naturally.
For example, if you’re selling an Assam black tea, you could write:
Our Assam black tea comes from tea-growing regions of Assam, India. It has a strong, malty taste and works well with milk or without it. Each pack contains 500g of loose-leaf tea.
That’s useful to a customer and gives Google clear information about the product.
Avoid copying the same description across 20 products. Give each product its own details.
Keep working on your Shopify SEO
SEO takes time. Google needs to crawl your pages, understand them, and decide where they belong in search results.
Keep an eye on Search Console and improve pages that get impressions but few clicks. A product sitting at position 12 with 1,000 impressions might deserve a better title and description before you start rewriting the whole store.
